Pre-Trip Briefing
January 22, 2024
I have been brushing up on my Portuguese in anticipation of the first three weeks in February, where God has opened the door for me to serve in Brazil with Jacob’s Well, a ministry aimed at community transformation.
Many years of widespread drought caused a multitude of problems for rural Brazilian farmers. As their old agricultural methods began to fail, farmers in drought-stricken areas had no choice but to move their families to the slums of nearby cities, like Fortaleza, on the eastern Brazilian coast. Jacob’s Well was founded with the hopes of securing reliable water sources and developing sustainable farming practices to restore the livelihood of families in this region. The ministry has taken a comprehensive approach, focusing on economic, social, and spiritual transformation in these communities.
In 2011, the three families involved in starting Jacob’s Well came up to Sonrise Mountain Ranch for a week-long retreat. Last fall, when seeking senior-year mission opportunities, I reached out to one of these families. Over the following months, Jacob’s Well graciously worked with me to provide a short-term opportunity to join their efforts.
In the next year, Jacob’s Well has planned to establish a church and ministry center in the town of Pentecoste as a home base for much of their operations, and will be in the early stages of this undertaking during my time there. Additionally, I will be involved in home visits, community center projects, agricultural work, and helping lead worship. My “engineering self” hopes to learn more about developing infrastructure in underserved areas in order to hone my vision for future service.
As I prepare to leave for Brazil and during my trip from Feb 1st through Feb 22nd, your prayers would mean a great deal to me. Please pray that my presence would be a blessing, and for eyes to see the doors God opens. Pray for my heart to be constantly sensitive and open to God’s voice. If you would like more information about Jacob’s Well or my trip, please don’t hesitate to contact me or visit:
